Lisa’s note: I love Sina’s book because she talks about a frustrating topic (our food supply) and not only has the education to speak knowledgeably but also has personal experience in learning what worked and didn’t work for her and her family. I also love that she shares success stories in the book with practical advice for what we can do in our own lives. Her son features in the interview (from off-camera) with some really great info, too. (Such a cutie!)

“Dr. McCullough…offers what could very well be a realistic, futuristic, Libertarian perspective to the conjoined issues of food and personal health. Dr. McCullough’s thesis that individuals must be responsible for their own wellness – starting in great part through their food awareness – is a bedrock rationale for the future.” (Pete Hardin, The Milkweed)

Americans have stopped being watchdogs over their own food supply. Roughly 100 years ago, with the birth of the FDA, we handed that responsibility over to the government and the food industry. They, in turn, have fundamentally transformed our food supply and it’s making us sick, including our children. Not only are we losing our health to food related illnesses like cancer and heart disease, we are losing our freedom. Did you know that government and the food industry have already chosen your dinner for you? In fact, the government nudges you to pick the foods they want you to eat. They’ve been doing it your whole life.

In Hands Off My Food! Dr. McCullough, a Ph.D. in Nutrition from the University of California at Davis, walks you through the truth behind what’s currently in our food and how it got there. You may be surprised to learn that our food system is not designed to protect our long-term health. Both the food industry and the government have played a major role in the demise of our food supply, but they are not the root of the problem. Dr. McCullough reveals who is ultimately responsible for the adulteration of our food and how each of us has the power to restore the integrity of the food we eat by taking back our consent. Together we can reclaim our voice by becoming the watchdogs we were meant to be. It’s easier than you might think!

Time Stamped Show Notes

0:16: Today I'm super excited to have Dr. Sina McCulloch she holds a PhD in nutritional science and a BS in neurobiology, physiology, and behavior both from the University of California-Davis. She was the director of research and development for a supplement company. Dr. McCulloh has also taught biochemistry and bioenergetics at UC Davis. She currently lives in Virginia where she homeschools her two children.

1:51: I came back to graduate school specifically to study under one man Dr. Paul Malay and when I first started learning under his mentorship he actually passed away unexpectedly so I was on my own at that point. Well specifically I chose to be on my own because when he died I made him the promise that I would continue working on his theory because I knew that nobody else would. It would just die along with him so because I made that promise to him.

3:32: Let's just start with your story because that kind of catapulted everything and the reason why you did what you did.

3:42: Well I actually developed an autoimmune disease from eating food, which was shocking since I'm supposed to technically be an expert in food, yet I got sick simply from eating food.

4:00: I launched this near five-year investigation into our food supply because I was perplexed. I thought if I have a doctoral degree in nutrition how is it that I'm getting sick from food? I realized that I didn't really know what's in our food supply, that I needed to re-educate myself.

I would get so bloated after eating a meal that I could look like I was 5 months pregnant. My condition was related to food. -Dr. McCullough
